What You Need to Know
- The cow is sent in at the beginning of the week (Monday or Tuesday) to Muxlow Meats. I will give you the exact date and send out a reminder the week prior.
- A day or two after the cow is sent in the butcher calls me with the hanging weight. I then call/text you to tell you how much you owe us (hanging weight x $3.50). You can drop cash or check off to me when you pick up your beef since I am only 7 minutes from the butcher. Or you can mail a check written out to me Julie Parlett to 1736 Wheeling Rd Imlay City, MI 48444.
- The butcher will call you within the 2 weeks after the cow is sent in for cutting instructions. Below I have posted the cut sheet. These are the questions you will be asked by the processor. You do not need to fill it out.
- Muxlow Meats will call you when your meat is ready for pick up. This will be about 2-3 weeks after the cow is sent in. When you pick your meat up you pay the butcher the processing fee by cash or check.

How much meat will I get?
When a cow is sent in the amount it weighs on hoof is the live weight. We send them in around 1000-1200 pounds. Sometimes they may be a little lighter other times a little heavier depending on the butcher date. The next weight to understand is the hanging weight which is about 60% of the live weight (about 600-700 pounds). This is hung on the hook with hide, head, legs, and guts removed. Essentially what is left is the meat and bones. We charge per pound at this point because it is the easiest to configure. Once the cutting and wrapping happens your take home meat is approximately 65% of the hanging weight. For a whole this is about 390-455 pounds, a half 195-228 pounds and a quarter 98-114 pounds.
When purchasing a quarter, half or whole you get a mixture of hamburger, steaks, and roasts. You can also get soup bones. The convenient part is you can customize your cuts to your family's needs. For example if your family likes more hamburger you can opt out of certain roasts or steaks and get more burger or vice versa.
